ABOUT US

The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPC) provides its member governments with services geared towards generating economic development in the region.  RPC focuses primarily on the provision of adequate infrastructure, job creation and retention and the promotion of entrepreneurship.  RPC uses its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) to identify and offer implementation strategies for the projects that each community feels would best assist them in development on the municipal, county, and regional levels.  RPC is designated as an Economic Development District (EDD) by the Economic Development Administration (EDA).

RPC as a whole was established in the 1960’s as an advisory planning agency for Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby, Saint Clair, and Walker Counties, and their resident municipalities.  RPC has since expanded its role as a regional service provider and continues to do so in order to best serve its member governments.  The array of services offered by RPC include:  transportation planning, community planning, technical assistance and grant-writing, project management, customized studies, plans and implementation tools, historic preservation and revitalization, geographic information systems, demographics, and economic development assistance.  RPC also houses several programs such as the Alabama Partnership for Clean Air (APCA), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Senior Services America, Inc. (SSAI), and a revolving loan fund (RLF).
