AIRPORTS
The Birmingham region is currently served by seven airports. The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM):BHM provides commercial and passenger transportation to the region and is the hub of air travel for the State of Alabama. Approximately 2,255 full time jobs providing a payroll of over $100 million annually stem from this facility, and there is an estimated injection of $140 million into the local economy (AU Montgomery Center for Business and Economic Development). Additionally the airport reports an estimated $285 million in airport-related tourism spending (AU Montgomery Center for Business and Economic Development). In 2005, almost 34,000 tons of cargo were shipped though BHM. Presently, BHM is working to expand its capacity through additional cargo space and runway space to accomodate larger aircraft.
