CLIMATE

The region's climate is humid and subtropical with mild winters and long, hot summers.  The annual average temperature for the region is around 64 degrees Fahrenheit.  Rainfall is usually abundant and distributed throughout the year.  The annual rainfall in Birmingham is 52 inches.  Mild winters rarely produce temerpartures low enough to cause freeze penetrations to depths greater than six inches.  This makes subsurface construction for foundations, roadways, and underground utilities more practical and affordable than in harsher climates.  Primary tornado season is March and April; there is a secondary tornado season in November and early December.

Alabama Partners for Clean Air (APCA)
APCA is an affiliation of 14 public, private and nonprofit organizations working to implement voluntary strategies that improve air quality in Jefferson and Shelby counties. APCA's goals are to achieve and maintain compliance with national air quality standards, to protect and improve public health, to minimize the economic impacts on existing businesses and support economic growth consistent with clean air goals.
