INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM

The interstate system is the backbone of the state and regional economies and continues to play a critical role in business productivity. The interstate highway system in the region makes up approximately 235 miles of the national highway system. Existing interstates includes the following:

• I-65: linking Birmingham to Mobile, AL and Grand Rapids, MI
• I-59: linking Birmingham to Chattanooga, TN
• I-20: linking Birmingham to Columbia, SC and Dallas, TX
• I-459: Birmingham metropolitan southern bypass
• I-22: linking Birmingham to Memphis, TN (under construction)
