PARKS & RECREATION
The Birmingham area is quickly becoming one the largest and most comprehensive park and trail systems in the country. The largest area parks include Oak Mountain State Park, Ruffner Mountain Park, and Tannehill State Park. These, combined with the emerging Red Mountain Park and downtown Birmingham Railroad Reservation Park, will create a regionally significant park system interconnected with walking, hiking, and bike trails that traverse both the urban and natural environments. The region's park system has developed in a consistant manner with the park system plan designed by Olmsted in 1925.
In addition to the park and trail system, the region maintains a wide range of sports parks, including Heardmont Park, the Trussville Athletic Complex, and George Ward Park to name a few. There are neighborhood parks located throughout the region as well.
The region is just a few miles from the Talladega Superspeedway and is home to the Barber Motorsports Speedway and Vintage Motorsports Museum.
The region offers dozens of golf courses including the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the Old Overton Golf Club at Liberty Park, and the Shoal Creek Golf Course.
There are several primary locations for fishing, boating, and canoeing. In addition to the Coosa and Black Warrior rivers, the region is crossed by the pictureque Cahaba River and the Five Mile Creek water systems. Logan Martin Lake, approximately 30 miles east of the City of Birmingham, offers a wide variety of recreation activities.
