The Birmigham region has seen a steady increase in population over the last several decades. While the urban population within the City of Birmingham has decreased, moving into other areas of the region, suburban communities have increased significantly, particularly those within Shelby and St. Clair counties. Overall the region has increased by 12% over the last seven years according to Census estimates.
