PROPERTY TAX
In the State of Alabama, property tax is based on property classification, millage rates, and exemptions. Taxes are calculated using a property's assessed value, multiplied by the millage rate, subtracted by any exemptions.
- Property Classifications - assessed percentage of value determined by defined class of property.
- Millage Rates - the tax rate determined by local taxing agencies applied to the assessed value of property. A mil is one-tenth of one cent.
- Exemptions - amount subtracted from the unadjusted tax bill, usually in the form of a homestead tax exemption.
