RAIL LINES
Railroad operations in the region have historically been oriented to the movement of goods between the major population center of the City of Birmingham to Gulf Coast port cities. The routes radiating out from the land-water transfer points have since been integrated into a more comprehensive rail network with the network web now including location points across the country.
The Birmingham region consists of Class I railroads (those with a base gross operating budget in excess of $261.92 million per year and Class III railroads ("short-line" railroads acting as feeder routes to Class I lines).
