Goals for the Center for Regional Planning and Design

  • Improve the quality of life for citizens through responsible planning, quality design and public/private partnerships.
  • Explore and test the principles, policies and proposals of different planning scenarios in the Greater Birmingham region. The Center’s work will complement the Region 2020 initiatives and Regional Council plans.
  • Maintain comprehensive regional information about the physical environment and related characteristics; ongoing projects; research and assist others looking for information on projects.
  • Inform and educate the general public, specific interest groups and government about the nature and benefits of community planning and design.
  • Encourage growth and development/redevelopment that protects resources, preserves farmland, restores damaged lands, promotes open space, honors our historic legacy, builds in harmony with the environment, encourages innovation and fosters community.
  • Seeks to attract funds to the region that will further regional planning efforts.
  • Provide a town hall meeting space that would be a neutral common ground for people to come together and talk about the future of their communities.

Among the benefits

  • Shared use of facility and resources.
  • Common work environment.
  • Potential of joint funding efforts.
  • Greater coordination and leverage of resources for regional governments and other partners.

Places are created… Places are preserved… Places are more useable… Quality of life is enhanced and the region is a better place to live.
