Vacant Properties Conference
Philip Amthor, Senior Planner in the Community Planning Department attended the Center for Community Progress' Vacant Properties Conference in New Orleans, LA last month. The conference highlighted innovative strategies in use around the country for cities dealing with disinvestment, blight, vacancy, abandonment and tax-delinquency properties. New Orleans has many of the problems of older, industrial cities such as Detroit, Youngstown, Buffalo, Flint, Cleveland and Birmingham; however the vacancy and abandonment caused by Hurricane Katrina are still being addressed every day in New Orleans. With Jefferson County's recovery from the April 2011 tornadoes as well as its more than 23,000 tax-delinquent, sold-to-state properties, this conference offered great insight and many useful strategies for our region to utilize.
