The grant program is designed to assist county and municipal governments within RPC’s planning area which includes Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby, and Walker Counties. Each local government was required to match the dollars requested in its grant applications.
Research Strategies was commissioned
in September by the Birmingham Regional Planning Commission
of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB) to conduct a random public
opinion telephone survey for the Central Alabama Region.
It was
the intent of the research to isolate and determine within
each of the counties (Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby,
St. Clair, and Walker) the percent of individuals who currently
use public transportation, have used public transportation
in other markets or have never used public transportation;
to determine what is their perception of public transportation
and to what extent would they elect to use public transportation
assuming it was available in their particular area. The
survey also looked to identify transportation and the residents’ willingness
to financially support public transportation improvements.
