Central Alabama Transportation Public Perception Survey
The
Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham
took receipt of the 2006 Public Opinion Survey
on Transportation in the Central Alabama Region
on Friday,
November 17,
2006 from Research Strategies, Inc., a national
marketing research firm headquartered in Mobile,
Alabama. The
purpose of the survey is to isolate and determine
within each of the region’s six (6) counties
with statistical accuracy:
-
The percent of individuals
who currently use public transportation
-
The percent of individuals
who have used public transportation in locations outside
of the
region
-
Individual perception
of public transportation
The extent to which
individuals would elect to use public transportation,
assuming that it was
available
- The extent to which individuals would be willing to
financially support transportation system improvements
The survey was conducted
by telephone using a random digit-dial methodology beginning
on Sunday October 1, 2006 and ending on Sunday November
12, 2006. Based on a collective population for the six
(6) counties of 1,031,412, Research Strategies projected
that a weighted sample of 800 completed surveys would
be sufficient to offer the research with an accuracy
of +/- 5.0 percentage points. A total of 9,798 calls
were made with a 57.45% refusal rate and a 73.41% incidence
rate. Two hundred ninetytwo (292) surveys of the 1,098
surveys completed (26.6%) terminated the call before
the end of the survey was reached. In total, eight hundred
and six (806) surveys were completed, achieving the sample
target. The random survey methodology delivered an accuracy
of +/-5 percentage points. The qualifying questions built
into the survey are:
1. Individuals who are
at least 18
years of age
2. Individuals who have
resided at their present
residence at least
one
year
3. Against anyone who themselves
or anyone in your household
presently work for an
advertising
agency, public relations
firm, market research company,
Police
Department,
the State of
Alabama, or a contractor
working for the Alabama
Department of Transportation?
