I-65/US 31 Mobility Matters Project

Scott Rumble, Senior Transportation Engineer at Atkins Global 'Collaborating with Munrostudios on the Mobility Matters Project animation was an enjoyable and rewarding experience starting with the initial consultation and continuing to the final delivery of the animation. Munrostudios were very flexible and responsive while working with our Atkins office located in the US. Munrostudios exceeded Atkins’ and our client’s high expectations with the overall quality of the animation and their attention to detail throughout the production. I am looking forward to working with Munrostudios on future projects'. This photorealistic animated vision of a new plan that proposes both transit and highway improvements to address the existing and emerging transportation system issues associated with this strategic south-central corridor of metropolitan Birmingham, USA. Traffic conditions in the study corridor on I-65 and US 31 are congested and are expected to become more severe in the years to come. Also, existing public transit service in the I-65 / US 31 Mobility Matters Project corridor primarily consists of a limited number of bus routes that have lengthy headways (time between buses). Mobility has become increasingly difficult and time consuming for commuters using I-65 and other routes within the study corridor. Therefore, both transit improvements and highway improvements are proposed in order to increase mobility in the I-65 / US 31 corridor.

The I-65/US 31 Mobility Matters Project (MMP) is a plan that proposes both transit and highway improvements to address the existing and emerging transportation system issues associated with this strategic south-central corridor of metropolitan Birmingham.  The I-65/US 31 MMP is a plan that proposes both transit and highway improvements to address the existing and emerging transportation system issues associated with this strategic south-central corridor of metropolitan Birmingham. Also, existing public transit service in the project corridor primarily consists of a limited number of bus routes that have lengthy headways (time between buses). Therefore, both transit improvements and highway improvements are proposed in order to increase mobility in the I-65/US 31 corridor.

The MMP study area involved two existing roadways, Interstate 65 and US Highway 31, which run parallel, north-south, to each other through the cities Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood and Birmingham in Jefferson and Shelby Counties.  Proposed alternatives also involved Columbiana Road and Green Springs Highway located parallel to I-65 between US 31 and University Boulevard.  I-65 was studied from Valleydale Road (CR 17) in Shelby County north to I-20/I-59 in Jefferson County, for a total project length of 13 miles.
